One of my colleagues, Dave Thurston, died this spring after a valiant fight with cancer. He was a popular science teacher who loved teaching and rocks. He taught electives in geology and had an amazing rock collection.
Knowing that many of my students were grieving him, I wanted to do something. I got the idea to have them paint rocks when I saw Maddie and Elise's painted rocks on the front porch. My students were so creative and many of them walked with me over to his classroom to put their rock on his showcase with all of his precious stones. It was a meaningful moment together.
